Once surrounded by concrete, the shores of the Saint-Charles River were renaturalized between 1995 and 2008 by the city of Quebec. This work required important demolition, bank reprofiling and renaturalization efforts. Unfortunately, over the last few years, the invasive common reed has established small colonies along the river. This suggests that the huge work site benefited the common reed, which is an excellent colonizer of recently disturbed areas. To prevent further invasion, the PHRAGMITES group accepted a mandate from the city to create an elimination and control program. This project will permit the description of various elimination techniques (manual, mechanical, chemical and tarping), develop various mitigation measures, schedule the control measures, develop a follow-up plan and estimate the costs associated with the implementation of the program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Since 2003, the Minist\u00e8re des Transports du Qu\u00e9bec (MTQ) has been actively involved in common reed research with the PHRAGMITES group. The MTQ granted Claude Lavoie a first research contract of 150 000 $ (2003-2007) to study the spread of common reed along Quebec’s highways. In April 2008, the Ministry granted the team a second research contract of 201 800$ (2008-2010), which permitted Claude Lavoie and Jacques Brisson to initiate research on methods to halt the spread of common reed along highway right-of-ways through the use of competing vegetation. The \u00celes-de-Boucherville National Park is heavily impacted by the invasive common reed: a large proportion of its wetlands are now composed of very dense reed beds, which are highly detrimental to activities in the park such as recreational boating. Many studies on the dissemination and genetics of the common reed, as well as its impacts on the fauna were carried out in this park. The park also faces the invasion of fallow fields by the common reed, potentially affecting large areas of the park. To address this threat, the PHRAGMITES group has begun experimental control and eradication measures. The park is contributing via a scholarship, technical assistance and the loan of material.
